Virus Hoaxes - Email Messages Warning of Viruses
Quite frequently, people get email messages warning them of a 'new virus threat' that apparently has been announced by some reputable company such as the government, Microsoft or American Online. Chances are more than likely that this is a virus hoax spread purely for the purpose of creating propaganda.
Among the oldest and most common virus hoaxes are:
- "Returned Mail"
- "Penpal Greetings"
- "Good Times"
- "PKZip" Trojan Horse
- "California/Wobbler"
- "Join the Crew"
- "AOL4FREE"
- "Naughty Robots"
- "Elvira"
- "Boza"

If you receive one of these emails do NOT forward it, rather, check with a reliable source to see if the virus is real. CERT is likely the most dependable place to confirm if there is a new virus threat in the wild.
